This is something I would like to see, there has been a lot of discussion about it and it sounds well worth the watch even if a lot of comments have been a bit "could have done better" about it.

I'll look for out for a local screening and hope I'm not too late.

Thanks for posting this.

It was an interesting decision, given that we had quite a similar case in Scotland last year that had a very different outcome. Atif Siddique was found guilty for looking at 'extremist' material and jailed for 8 years. Then his solicitor was also taken to court for saying that the trial had been held in an atmosphere of hostility. Some of the student's internet viewing was done at an FE college, where staff had to give police full access to records.

My own feeling is that we are starting down a dangerous path when we prosecute for 'thought crimes' and that Atif Siddique has been a victim of the current climate of suspicion and paranoia. There is a difference between curiosity and actually carrying out a crime. It seems unthinkable that someone would be jailed for 8 years for downloading material about IRA campaigns (to take a Western example) for instance. Double standards, or Islamophobia?

In our library, we had a complaint from a Scottish student about showing Al Jazeera on our satellite TV. We have had to ask students not to view videos of beheadings in our library, since they are in a public space and may offend others. Staff themselves are open to criminalisation if they accidentally view something illegal. It's a pretty awful situation for people who provide access to information to be in.

My mentor was much easier to find: I went upstairs to talk to the Head of Libraries, and I got her to do the mentor training. "Growing your own" is definitely an option I'd recommend.

I know what you mean... Some people need to learn the SET * NOMAIL command!

I've added your blog to my aggregator and I'll stick a link on my blog when I get around to it. It's fun, isn't it?

Hi there, found your blog through Katharine's. I had a very similar experience to you when I was looking for a mentor. The list on CILIP's website was not up to date, and I contacted at least 4 names who didn't reply very promptly to my emails. When they did, it was to say they already had too many commitments. This took months. I was over the moon when I finally found someone who agreed to help, and she's turned out to be great. I sometimes wonder whether chartership really needs to be this complicated.

Hello. I was sorry and surprised to hear about your difficulty in finding a mentor for Chartership. I was very lucky to find a mentor easily and found him to be very, very supportive - always offering constructive views and heaps of encouragement. If he was unsure of anything , he often contacted Michael Martin. Replies from both were ALWAYS prompt (very important to me on my learning curve!). CDG were always very, very helpful too.

On a general note - thanks for starting this blog. I found it extremely interesting and useful to read. Could you tell me a bit more about the IT workshop - was it a CILIP one? or an in-house one? a CDG one?

PS I'm new in post as a librarian at a health library.

I wonder if it depends whereabouts you are in the country? I found (in the East Midlands) a mentor from the list on the CILIP website - first one I contacted got back to me within a week and agreed to take me on so it was all really quick.
